Did You Know It’s Ok To Be A Rebellious Church?
The church, of which you are a part, is called to live counter-culturally (rebellious) wherever she is. It is the essence of the popular adage – “Be in the world but not of the world”. But drawn from the words of Jesus in John 17:15-17.
15) I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one. 16) They are not of the world just as I am not of the world, 17) Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.…
The problem is that many of us are blinded to the culture we are supposed to rebel against, limiting this command down to not drinking, cussing or not having sex before marriage. The scope of this command and call runs far deeper than that.
Does your culture prize overworking and putting in 60-70 hours weekly? You are called to rebel and honour your body’s limitations and duty of care to your family.
Does your culture value being all you can be as the most important thing? Rebel and live contrary to that, live as unto Christ, and be whatever He wants you to be and do.
Does your culture honour the individual rights over the rights of the collective? You must rebel and love your neighbour as you love yourself.
We can not effectively live Christian lives without being aware of the shape “the world” takes within our particular country and cultural context.
This type of rebellious, countercultural living can’t be practised by individual Christians trying to obey on their own. It can only be achieved in a tight-knit Christian community living The Way together as a family. May the Lord be glorified in and through His counterculture community: the church.
Are you rebellious, and do you belong to a rebellious church?
I truly hope so.
