Kingdom Insights on Current Affairs: Here We Go Again
There are times when I comment on current affairs, but my focus is not merely on the events themselves. Instead, I look for kingdom insights, seeking to understand what is happening from heaven’s perspective.
Ecclesiastes 1:9 is key to discerning the times and carrying the insight of Issachar—knowing what to do, how to pray, and how to align with the mind of the Lord, or at least come closer to it.
“What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.”
“History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new.” — Ecclesiastes 1:9
With the vast history recorded in Scripture, the Holy Spirit has given us every possible archetype—of people, nations, and situations. Whether in 2025, 3025, or 5025, the patterns remain the same. Our task is to discern them, and this requires two key abilities.
The first is the ability to recognize, “This is That.” In other words, to see how what is happening today mirrors something already revealed in Scripture. This demands a deep knowledge of the Word and sensitivity to the Spirit, who will bring the right passage to mind at the right time—just as Peter did at Pentecost.
The key is to look at dominant characteristics and fruit. Jesus said, “By their fruit, you will know them.” If we can identify a biblical type in the present, we can then see how God responded to it in Scripture. This gives us clarity beyond political biases, news cycles, or human reasoning because God does not change, nor does His Word.
For instance, in a previous post, I pointed out that elements of Nebuchadnezzar’s nature can be seen in the current POTUS. Likewise, when we examine Russia, we see the characteristics of Assyria—an aggressive, violent force with little regard for others, driven by imperial ambition. Babylon’s Nebuchadnezzar was also an imperialist, but his strategy leaned more on assimilation and cultural dominance rather than raw brutality, like Assyria. Sound familiar? These patterns don’t change.
So how do you handle an Assyria? Does biblical wisdom suggest that “a deal” is the right approach?
God deals with people according to their hearts. “To the pure, He shows Himself pure, but to the devious, He shows Himself shrewd.” — Psalm 18:26
When a nation adopts the spirit of Assyria, it cannot be reasoned with—it must be restrained.
“Because your rage against Me and your tumult have come up to My ears, therefore I will put My hook in your nose and My bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way which you came.” — Isaiah 37:29
I don’t claim to know precisely what that will look like in our time. But this is the divine destiny of Assyrian nations, and it should shape how we pray regarding Russia.
